UMRISS, 2021

The municipal Galerie am Prater opened its doors in 1967. For decades it has been run by strong, unconventional figures – both artists and art historians. It became one of the most popular meeting-points of the lively East Berlin art scene. After its temporary closure in 2007, and following comprehensive renovations, Prater Galerie will reopen in autumn 2021 as a place for art, culture, and the neighbourhood. While renovations of the building continue, on the construction site fence it will be possible to gain insight into the rich history of the space. In a series of posters, past protagonists of the gallery will have their say. Additionally, Prater Galerie hosts a work from Kollektiv x-embassy:

UMRISS is an artistic research project that includes an artists’ publication and poster. Since 2019, members of Kollektiv x-embassy investigated questions relating to art and memory in urban spaces in Prenzlauer Berg and Pankow. This included dialogues with female artists and activists who were active during the years shortly before and after 1989, as well as today. UMRISS points towards interconnections between places, narratives, and lived urban histories. Coinciding with Die Balkone 2, the publication will be made available online at www.kollektiv-x-embassy.com

The poster serves as both a map and a table of contents for the publication and will be visible at the following sites: Cnr. Ossietzkystr. / Am Schloßpark, at the Göhrener Ei, at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, at Wasserturmplatz, Hermann-Hesse-Str. 19, at the Kulturbrauerei (cnr Schönhauser Allee/Sredzkistr.), in Bürgerpark Pankow and around the former Wall at Nordbahnstr., Schönfließerstr. 21, Grabbeallee 33 (Kurt Lade Klub), Grabbeallee 34, Kastanienallee 7–9 (Prater Galerie), and in Bucher Forst.

Die kommunale Galerie am Prater wurde bereits 1967 ins Leben gerufen und jahrzehntelang von starken, eigenwilligen Persönlichkeiten – Künstler:innen und Kunsthistoriker:innen – geführt. Sie wurde zu einem beliebten Treffpunkt der engagierten ostberliner Kunstszene. Nach ihrer temporären Schließung im Jahr 2007 und einer anschließenden umfassenden Sanierung öffnet die Prater Galerie im Herbst 2021 als Ort für Kunst, Kultur und Nachbarschaft ihre Türen wieder. Während die Bauarbeiten im Prater noch laufen, wird der Bauzaun in der Kastanienallee 7-9 bespielt und die traditionsreiche Geschichte der Galerie am Prater darauf präsentiert. Auf Plakaten kommen frühere Protagonist:innen der Galerie zu Wort. Zu Gast am Bauzaun ist außerdem das Kollektiv x-embassy:

UMRISS ist ein künstlerisches Forschungsprojekt des Kollektivs x-embassy, in dessen Rahmen eine gleichnamige Publikation und ein Plakat entstand. Das Kollektiv beschäftigt sich seit 2019 mit Fragen zu Kunst und Erinnerung in den urbanen Räumen von Prenzlauer Berg und Pankow. Ausgangspunkt sind Dialoge mit Frauen*, die in den Jahren vor dem Mauerfall sowie jetzt im heutigen Pankow künstlerisch und/oder aktivistisch tätig waren. UMRISS weist auf Orte, Narrative und gelebte Geschichten von Stadtraum hin. Zeitgleich mit Die Balkone 2 steht die Publikation online zur Verfügung unter www.kollektiv-x-embassy.com

Das Plakat dient als Kartografie und Inhaltsverzeichnis der Publikation und wird an folgenden Orten zu sehen sein: Ossietzkystr./Ecke Am Schloßpark, am Göhrener Ei, am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, am Wasserturmplatz, Hermann-Hesse-Str. 19, im Bürgerpark Pankow und am Nordbahnstr.
