Street names come along with monuments as useful tools for the patriarchal sovereign to demarcate and control public spaces. Different groups hold important awareness campaigns in Berlin about the names of the streets we shape our lives around. Around 25 percent streets in Berlin are named after individual people; 88 percent for men and only 11 percent for women. As a newcomer to the neighborhood, Pınar Öğrenci was intrigued by the street names around her area as well. Her research brought her more information about Wedding-born SPD city politician Ella Kay, who was not only part of the resistance against the Hitler regime but also one of the few women mayors of PrenzlauerBerg, who was also especially dedicated to youth and education. Thanks to Öğrenci’s scratch on the surface, we have become more aware how Kay’s name was initially given to a part of today’s Winsstrasse and in 1993 was pushed towards the eastern side of Danziger Strasse, leaving its initial position to the fifteenth-century Prussian landowner and mayor Thomas Wins. As a gesture dedicated to all the women whose work and struggle are not named or made visible, Öğrenci will use her balcony to familiarize us with Kay’s face.

Straßennamen dienen zusammen mit Denkmälern als nützliche Werkzeuge des patriarchalen Souveräns zur Abgrenzung und Kontrolle des öffentlichen Raums. In Berlin gibt es viele wichtige Aufklärungskampagnen verschiedener Initiativen über die Namen der Straßen, um die herum wir unser Leben gestalten. Etwa 25% der Straßen in Berlin sind nach einzelnen Personen benannt; 88% nach Männern und nur 11% nach Frauen. Als Neuankömmling im Kiez war auch Pınar Öğrenci von den Straßennamen in ihrer Umgebung fasziniert. Durch ihre Recherchen fand sie mehr Informationen über die im Wedding geborene SPD-Stadtpolitikerin Ella Kay heraus, die nicht nur Teil des Widerstands gegen das Hitler-Regime war, sondern auch eine der wenigen Bürgermeisterinnen in Prenzlauer Berg, die sich besonders für Jugend und Bildung einsetzte. Dank Öğrencis Kratzen an der Oberfläche ist uns bewusster geworden, dass ursprünglich ein Teil der heutigen Winsstraße nach Ella Kay benannt wurde und wie der Name dann 1993 auf die östliche Seite der Danziger Straße verschoben wurde, um ihre ursprüngliche Position dem preußischen Gutsbesitzer und Bürgermeister Thomas Wins aus dem 15. Jahrhundert zu überlassen. Als Geste, die all den Frauen gewidmet ist, deren Arbeit und Kampf nicht benannt und sichtbar gemacht wird, wird Öğrenci ihren Balkon nutzen, um uns mit dem Gesicht von Ella Kay vertraut zu machen.
Berlin-based artist Pınar Öğrenci (born in 1973 in Van, Turkey) has a background in architecture that informs her poetic and experiential video-based work and installations that accumulate traces of “material culture” related to forced displacement across geographies. She is the founder of MARSistanbul, an art initiative launched in 2010 in Istanbul, and currently teaches at Raum Strategies Kunsthochschule Weißensee Berlin.
